Who are the Rajputs? Who are the Kshatriyas? What was their job?
Nearly 4,000 years ago, Hindu Saints divided the society into 4 parts. One of them was Kshatriya (Khatri in Punjabi). What was their purpose? These people were rulers, administrators, and warriers. The Kshatriyas were sent from a young age to the Brahmin’s ashram to study administration and act of war. The war guru taught fighting and the spiritual guru taught religion and governance. The Kshatriya were thinking themselves to be superior in society. Kshatriya weddings took place only in Kshatriya families. Khatri could marry Shudra's daughter but Shudar could not marry a Khatri girl. Khatri used to leave his shudra wife, she remarried to Shudra and was called Shudar's dharmptni. Now a days sometime happens out of Punjab. Few years ago, it is famous, that when a Hindi film star Jat got married to a Hindu Brahmin girl, Pandit asked what is your caste? The movie star said that My caste is jat. The Pandit asked that are you a Brahmin? The answer was no. Then he asked are you Kshatriya? No answer found. Then asked if you are a vaish, Then also the answer came, no. Finally, the Pandit said that you are a Shudar and you cannot marry this girl. Then he asked for the remedy, the Pandit said that the Kanya has to be placed in the lap of a Brahmin first. First she will be called brahmin’s wife and then you will get marry to her and your wife will not be called your patni (wife) she wii be your dharmpatni . It was done so.
Kings were also made among these Kshatriyas. The king's descendants were called Rajputs. The king's son was called Kunwar, the king's grandson was called Bhanwar, and the king's great grandson was called Tanwar. The women of the royal family also studied marshal arts and governance. They were supportive of men when needed. Man could have more than one marriages but woman not. At the time of her husband's death, the wife was to go for Sati (means she will burnt alive with corp of her husband). This practice is still prevalent in Rajputana (Rajasthan and around). But it is illegal.
As Maharaja Ranjit Singh was a Bhatti Rajput King. He had many queens. Out of them only two were Rajput girls, who were daughters of Kangra’s Raja Sansar Chand Katoch, Kumari Mehtab Devi and Kumari Rajbanso. Rajbanso died before the Maharaja. According to Rajput traditions during the funeral of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Rani Mehtab Devi placed the Maharaja's head in her lap and and got burnt with corp of Maharaja Ranjit Singh with her five mades. People say six women were burned alive with Maharaja but no one heard any cry. One thing to mention here that many people say Maharaja Ranjit Singh was Bhatti Jat which is totally wrong. Bhatties are Rajputs not Jat.
Rajputs are as wel as Kshatrya. Nowadays there are so called Bhapas, aroras or other such clans that are kshatryas. All these people became Sikhs under Guru Nanak's teachings. Even today, these people are much rigid in Sikhism than Jats or Rajputs. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was Mehta and Guru Gobind Singh Ji belong to the Sodhi Khatri clan. This message was spread by Guru Nanak Dev that all people of the world are equal. There is no high and low. Guru Gobind Singh created an army from shudra clan by teaching marshal arts, which is called the Nihang Singh. Guru Gobind Singh gave everyone the status of Kshatri. Because before that time shudras were not authorised to get training of arms or any type of marshal arts. Today, each Nihang Singh calls himself a Kshatrya.
