Babbar Nand Singh (1895 - 1926) This great Babar Nand Singh was born on 12 October 1895 in village Ghurial Distt. Jalandhar (Punjab). His father was Sardar Ranga Singh and mother was Nihali. Being a member of a reputated family, he had a great diginity in area. This family is still known as the Babbars family. His father passed away at an early age. He was grown up by Mother and elder brother. He was married at the age of fifteen. Most dreadful events in Punjab such as the Jallianwala and Nankana Sahib massacres affected Babar Nand Singh a lot. For participating in Guru ka Bag freedom agitation, he was sentenced six months imprisonment. The persecution of peaceful Akali volunteers changed his life and he decided to renounce non-violence in favor of violence. After joining the Babbar Akali movement, Babbar Nand Singh started to take part in the movements of independence. After his return from prison, his ideas became revolutionary. In the village, he used to read the books of the freedom fighters and recite them to the people. The British government had a lot of people around them who were spying all activities of the Babbars for police station Adampur. Nand Singh advised to them many times that they should not betray their brothers but these people did not listen. The leader of these informers was Subedar Gaenda Singh who was always in opposition. He also got a gun from the government. It was his job to set up a police outpost in the village. He used to say, "Babbars can't do anything against me. I am also a ex soldier and I don't even care for them." On the other hand, Babbar were also keeping an eye on these traitors . Finally, on 16th April 1923, at Sant Thakar Singh's cottage on the bank of Nasrallah Chow, near Rajoal village, Babbars passed a resolution to give a lesson to Subedar Genda Singh. For this job, Babbar Nand Singh was assigned to monitor movements of the Subedar Genda Singh. He spied and got information that the same day, subedar was grazing his animals towards village Daroli kalan near the Gurudwara Jabbar. When Babbers chased him, subedar was not found in assigned location. Very next day, on 17th April 1923, Subedar Genda Singh was playing card with his friends in the village. In chase out, Babbars reached there and shouted on him, "Take out your gun, which is given by Adampur police station." At the same time Nand Singh and his companions fired at Subedar Genda Singh. He died on the spot. Babbars did not harrashed his friends including his wife. This news spread everywhere. Police began search by questioning to all. On April 25, 1923, Babar Nand Singh was arrested. He was taken to Adampur police station and tortured. After few days, he was transfered from Adampur to Lahore. Babbr Nand Singh was prosecuted for murder. He was sentenced to death and finally this great son of soil Babar Nand Singh was hanged in Lahore jail on 27th February 1926. These great people will be remembered till end of world. They are pillars of indian freedom. ( Sidki Soorme )
